On May 12, Ke Nicole Du Hu ’22 became one of 161 high school seniors named a 2022 U.S. Presidential Scholar, selected from a pool of 5,000 invited to apply for the prestigious designation and 620 chosen as semifinalists. Vice Rector for Faculty Michael Spencer has been selected as the next head of school at the Oregon Episcopal School in Portland, Oregon. Rector Kathy Giles shared the news with the SPS community last week, describing Spencer as "the ultimate school person" and OES as a superb match for his spiritual, professional and personal strengths. She also noted that Spencer’s start date of July 1, 2023, gives St. Paul’s School time to celebrate the many contributions he has made to the School since joining the faculty in 2007.
For St. Paul’s School Teaching Fellows Kelli Mackey and Nicole Petherbridge, the opportunity to attend their graduation ceremony at the University of Pennsylvania’s Graduate School of Education wasn’t just about earning a master’s degree in education — it was also the first time the two fellows, who earned their undergraduate degrees in 2020 from Hamilton and Colby, respectively, had the opportunity to participate in a college commencement.
After the ceremony, Petherbridge shared the following sentiment: “As we waited to process into the ceremony, Kelli and I were reflecting on just how fortunate we felt to be a part of this program and to have been afforded the opportunity to attend our graduation ... thank you, thank you, thank you!” Mackey and Petherbridge, each with two years of experience at SPS, will stay on at the School as full-time faculty members — Mackey in the Humanities Department and Petherbridge in Mathematics.
From Food to Fuel
In 2020, St. Paul’s School installed an innovative composting system that converts food waste into clean, renewable energy. In April, SPS was recognized with a 2022 Casella Sustainability Leadership Award for the Coit Hall Grind2Energy system that’s helping keep School food waste out of New Hampshire landfills. In 2021, the system captured 45 tons of food waste, generated 8,163 kWh of power (enough to power nine homes for one month), reduced carbon emissions by 31 tCO2e (the equivalent of 74,334 fewer miles driven) and extracted 2.6 tons of fertilizer.
Following a two-year hiatus, St. Paul’s School welcomed visiting artists and the Concord community back to the Chapel of St. Peter and St. Paul in April for its renowned Keiser Concert Series.
During the final virtual event of the School’s yearlong series celebrating 50 years of coeducation, composer Gusty Thomas ’82, dance instructor Jen Howard ’92 and creative producer Stephanie Quaye ’07 spoke with Dean of Studies Lori Bohan and Teacher of Fine Arts Becky Soderberg ’94 about the importance of art and the role creativity has played in their personal definitions of purpose. If you missed the discussion, you can watch the full recording here.

In Case You Missed It
A Chance to Pay it Forward
Earlier this month, Rector Kathy Giles and members of the St. Paul’s School Board of Trustees announced the election of David Scully ’79, P’21 as the Board’s next president. Scully will begin his term on July 1, when current President Archibald Cox, Jr. ’58 retires after a decade of Board service. The formal announcement was paired with a letter from Scully to the SPS community that highlighted his deep connections to the School and his excitement regarding its future.
